Rainbow Crayons

Somehow we have acquired lots and lots of crayons. I've seen this idea many times but have never tried it. My co-teacher for Busy Bakers Camp decided to offer it to those who were interested. We were surprised how many wanted to sit, unwrap, and break crayons for quite awhile. Especially some of our more energetic students! This is a great fine-motor activity. You can find the directions at Teaching Tiny Tots.

Making Bread and Butter

Let me start off by saying Y U M. One of our baking projects at Busy Bakers Camp was making bread and butter. And, of course, eating bread and butter. (My wonderful co-teacher put together the best activities for this camp!) Due to lack of time, we made the bread one day, put it in the fridge overnight to slow down the rising, and then baked the bread the next day. We put samples out for the parents during departures (we actually did this with everything we baked last week).

Bread and butter. Yum, yum, yum!

Baking Camp - Painting with Kitchen Utensils

This week at Busy Bakers Camp, not only did we use kitchen utensils for our baking projects, but we also took them to the art table.

Yeah, it started getting messy as they mixed the red and blue paint to make purple, and the blue and yellow paint to make green. But you know I love some messiness. So we took it outdoors, where we could really move the paint around!

Yep! Lots of fun.

Making Berry Shortcake

It's Busy Bakers Camp this week, and today we made berry shortcake.

The children brought their favorite berries. I had them help me hull and slice the strawberries.

We sprinkled some sugar on canned biscuits.

And then we got to work with the whipped cream.

We also learned not to lift the mixer while it's running....

And then, it was time to taste it.

Yum! Looks good, doesn't it?

Ice in the Sensory Table

This is an oldie, but always a goodie! Freeze anything small in containers of water. Supply hammers (and safety glasses, if you have them), and stand back. On this particular day, we were chiseling out bugs for The Great Outdoors Camp. This is a water table that my co-teacher rescued from a local elementary teacher who no longer needed it. We love it! Our other (home-made) sensory tables are much smaller.

Adding On to Our Cardboard Structure

We got time to work on our cardboard structure a bit more today. Thank goodness we built it under the awning, because it rained during the night and parts of the morning.

Today's focus was making the first set of tubes bend and attach to the brick. Then, a second set of tubes was started above the first set, eventually connecting to the first set. I love when they stop, take a step back, and look at their work. And then add some more.

Building with Cardboard Over the Sensory Table

While cruising the 'net for ideas to pin to my Pinterest boards, I stumbled across this gem of a website. Wow! Why did I never think to use cardboard for our sensory table? And so, we gathered some boxes, some duct tape, some tubes, cups and funnels....and let the kids go to work.

What I love about activities such as this is how the children learn to work together naturally. There is great discussion and debates over what should be placed where. There is sharing materials, asking for additional materials, wondering how something will fit into a certain space.

This particular structure evolved into a bird feeder. They wanted the top to be covered, and yet open on one side for the birds to enter. They added a perch and a bowl of bird seed.

And then, they spent a lot of time taping tubes together, hoping eventually they will connect to our cement wall.

This is all under our awning, so we were able to leave it out. (Have I mentioned we still have had very little summer weather, with lots of rain?)

I'll be curious to see what they do with this tomorrow.

Painting With Sticks

During our "Great Outdoors" camp last week, we took a nature walk and collected sticks. The following day we taped paper to the wall outside and used the sticks as paintbrushes. Stand back, because the paint does fly! Love these outdoor projects!
