Threading with Plastic Needles

Today I chose a quiet activity to calm the excitement of the Mother's Day Tea that would occur in a couple of hours.

I set out 6 mats at our art table, each with a cup of colored macaroni and yarn attached to a plastic needle. (I realized quickly the yarn must actually be tied to the needle or it will keep slipping out.) I secured the other end with a piece of macaroni to stop the pieces from sliding right off.

As soon as the 3's arrived, the 6 spaces were occupied, with more children waiting for a turn. I loved the quiet hum as they concentrated on stringing the macaroni.

When they added the desired amount, I cut off the needle (we use them over and over again!) and tied the ends together. They proudly walked around showing off their new necklaces, some even wearing them during the tea.

This would be a nice tray activity for one person, too!

  1. I love threading! I've been working on this with my little girl! She's 22 months--we've been using a M&D set with "shoestrings" which can be a little tricky.

I'd love if you'd like to link up to my Teaching Time for Toddlers post.

  2. One thing we do is double the thread and tie one knot at the very end rather than at the needle.

  3. Hi Sheryl!
How did you dye the pasta (or did you buy it that way?)?
